The El Paso VA Health Care System in El Paso, Texas is recruiting full-time Psychologists. The El Paso VAHCS is part of VISN 18 Network, and is a standalone ambulatory care facility with over 600 employees and growing. We are an out-patient clinic with working hours from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm, Mondays through Fridays.

Salary is determined by the Compensation Panel based on qualifications, education and experience.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:

The Psychologist is assigned to the Special Exams Unit.  Performs initial and follow-up history and physical examinations consultations on patients.  Provides education and counseling of patients and family in preventative care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatment and drugs. 


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Candidates must meet all the requirements identified in the VA Qualification Standard for Psychologist, GS-180 as set forth in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6, dated April 15, 2002. 

  • Citizen of the United States
  • Current, full, active and unrestricted license in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
  • Have successfully completed a professioan psychology intership training program that has been accredited by APA.
  • Appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). [No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. Chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity who is not proficient in written and spoken English].
  • See VA Handbook 5005, Part III, Chapter 2, paragraph 7, and VA Handbook 5019, Occupational Health Services. All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position.
  • In accordance with Executive Order 12564, Federal employees hired in a drug testing designated position will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use during employment.

After interviewing is Complete…
Many factors influence how quickly a selectee can be brought on board. If the Selecting Official chooses an internal candidate, all other candidates will be notified of the outcome. Otherwise, once the Selecting Official makes their selection, a tentative offer would be made and upon acceptance the pre-appointment process would begin.

What does the pre-appointment process entail?
Before you can be appointed a number of steps must be completed. The more active you are in this process, the quicker you can be brought on board. The first part is VetPRO, the VA’s credentialing system used to verify your education, work history, license(s) and references. Next you will be asked to submit to fingerprinting when you arrive to complete your pre-employment physical. Lastly, a Professional Standards Board (PSB) will convene to determine the salary to be offered. Once these processes are complete, you will be contacted with an official start date and commitment package.
