As part of the VA healthcare team, Practical Nurses complete their work with only a general review by a Registered Nurse. The Practical Nurse will demonstrate the ability to respond to the Veteran's nursing needs for nursing, medication, and equipment-assisted care; and to recognize deviations from normal.  Demonstrated ability to conduct group activities for patients and families.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients, family and other staff members and to respond appropriately to emergency situations.  Incorporates acceptable, established customer service standards into practice.  Demonstrates knowledge and skill sufficient to prepare, administer, and appropriately document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous medications as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures.  Observation and documentation will include patient's response to medication administered and the reporting of any noted change in patient's condition to the RN.

DUTIES:

DUTY LOCATION OF THIS POSITION WILL BE AT THE NORTH LITTLE ROCK CAMPUS

 

As a VA Practical Nurse you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured Veterans.

Duties include documenting observations and changes in patient's condition and reports any noted change in patient's condition to the Registered Nurse; collaborates with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; provides a full range of nursing care to patients with Geriatric/Psychiatric, restorative, wound care, nutritional and medication needs; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards and functional statements of assigned grade. The Community Living Center provides Veteran centered care using an interdisciplinary team approach.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship.  
  • Graduate of a school of practical nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and one of the following: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a Practical nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia. 
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support

 

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Practical Nurse Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.

One (1) year of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) experience is preferred.

 

One (1) year of Long Term Care LPN experience is preferred.

This position will be filled on a full-time permanent basis.  Upon completing any required probationary period, the position will be permanent.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:  Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.   VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.  This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
