 The Alexandria VA Health Care System is seeking a Health Technician (Telehealth Clinical Technician) to support and manage telehealth clinical encounters. The Alexandria VA Health Care System, Alexandria, Louisiana is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans within 23 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes.  The VAMC is located in Pineville, Louisiana with community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Jennings, Lafayette, Fort Polk, and Natchitoches, Louisiana.

DUTIES:

These positions are located at the VA Health Care System in Alexandria, LA.  The Telehealth Clinical Technician serves in a generalist role to support Telehealth clinical encounters from the patient and provider location as the site Telepresenter, imager for telehealth store and forward applications, clinic manager for real time telehealth events, including patient education activities, provision of equipment for the Health Program, and technical and scheduling activities.   As the Telehealth Clinical Technician, your primary day-to-day duties will be comprised of a combinationof telepresent, imager, and screener related duties to include the clinical, business, scheduling and technical aspects of telehealth applications.  As the telehealth imager, the incumbent will perform telehealth imaging to include tele-retinal screening, tele-dermatology, tele-wound care imaging and other related programs and procedures.

The incumbent will assist the care manager with the patient's clinical reminders related to the imaging process and document all clinical information into the patient's electronic medical record.  The incumbent will also be responsible for installing, maintaining, performing inventory and training staff on all video conferencing technologies and other telehealth peripherals.  As the Telehealth Clinical Technician, you will perform patient screenings and evaluate patient needs regarding the appropriateness of telehealth.  The incumbent will familiarize the patient with all telehealth services such as home telehealth, store and forward, and clinical video telehealth.  The incumbent will also be responsible for administrative duties such as documenting patient and clinical reminders, scheduling follow-up visits, and maintaining control records and tests.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Time-in-grade:  Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

Specialized Experience:

GS-5

Specialized Experience - You must possess at least one full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position successfully that is equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service.  Examples of specialized experience may include but are not limited to:  working in a medical setting with multiple disciplines obtaining patient medical histories and demographics, preparing room and equipment for treatment, providing education on procedures and findings, scheduling appointments, and utilizing a computerized patient record system for entering data and retrieving information; and performing a variety of telehealth imaging actions involving tele-retinal screening, tele-dermatology, tele-wound care and other related program and procedures.

OR

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

 

OR

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level.  To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned).  Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess.  Add the two percentages.  The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.

Physical Requirements - The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light items.  The work requires above average agility and dexterity.  The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or assisting patients.  Must be able to travel to outlying Community Bases Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and possess a valid driver's license.
