The IT Specialist (APPSW) is located at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO). The FLWO is a geographically isolated, technically specialized and highly interactive scientific research environment in continuous 24 hours operation located on Mt. Hopkins with in the Coronado National Forest in Amado, AZ. The purpose of this position is to manage the computer systems that support a multi-telescope Observatory that operates a variety of instruments, each with custom software packages.

AND
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the federal service and typically includes the following: a) utilizing a variety of programming languages and tools to design and implement the software required to support the overall operation, and in particular the control systems, of large data collecting instruments such as telescopes; b) maintaining and troubleshooting existing software; c) developing software to automate subsystems and d) serving as computer systems manager for a complex network involving multiple operating systems.
Education is not substitutable for specialized experience at this grade level.
The incumbent of this position will be required to respond to operational issues affecting computer systems at FLWO telescopes that can arise at any time, and which may require on-site or remote support outside of the hours of the established tour of duty.
This position requires a valid Driver’s License and the ability to operate two and four wheel drive passenger vehicles and/or light trucks on a narrow, unpaved, mountain roads.
The Smithsonian does not pay relocation expenses.
