The incumbent will function as an interdisciplinary team member, assisting social workers, psychologists, physicians, nurses and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program. Peer Support Specialist perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting their peers in articulating their goals for recovery, learning and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the Specialist's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. The incumbent functions as a role model, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serves as a consumer advocate, provides consumer information and peer support for Veterans.
He/she must have the ability to assist others in treatment based on the principles of recovery and resiliency. Duties may include, but not limited to:
Assists Veterans with identifying and navigating aspects of recovery.
Co-facilitating and facilitating peer oriented groups for Veterans receiving mental health services.
Developing additional peer oriented services based upon the needs of the Recovery Team and Mental Health Service Line.
The incumbent will work closely with the Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) team in serving homeless/formerly homeless Veterans. Additionally, the incumbent will also work closely with the Community Case Management (CCM) team serving Veterans with serious mental illness. Accessing transportation and driving a government car is required; as work is performed in a wide range of settings, including within the Medical Center, Community Based Outpatient Clinics, in community or private family homes; or in transport vehicles. Additionally, employees who operate a government vehicle are required to have a valid driver's license. The incumbent will be hospital based and will work on the inpatient mental health unit and residential recovery center (RRC). The incumbent will also work in outpatient mental health and on the patient aligned care teams (PACT) in primary care. Occasional travel required.
There is no educational substitution at this grade level.
Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
