This position is that of Database Administrator/Team Leader in the Infrastructure Services Branch (ISB), Division of Information Systems (DIS), Office of Information and Resource Management (OIRM).
The Infrastructure Services Branch is responsible for supporting the NSF Information Technology (IT) infrastructure including the NSF Data Center. The Branch is also responsible for database management and database performance management. The ISB/DBAs are responsible for the management, administration, backup/recovery, database logging, IT security oversight, and performance monitoring of all centrally maintained databases.

Serves as a technical expert for the central database administration (DBA) function including all database servers. This includes all centrally managed administrative and grants management systems including all modifications and additions to the database objects and replication, and database upgrades.
Plans, establishes, and manages data administration tasks and database administration functions to support all database systems including Sybase, Microsoft SQL, and Oracle including all database servers in the NSF test, integration, acceptance, and production environments. Reviews data administration and database administration programs at other Federal agencies and in the private sector.
Provides expertise for data management and database administration functions which involve the collection, synthesis, maintenance and storage of critical sets of agency data. Interprets Federal policies regarding data/information management and recommends integration in agency policies.
Establishes standards and procedures for database structures. Participates in formal design reviews as an authority on database management to ensure conformity with criteria. Works closely with branch chiefs, project leaders, application designers, other database administrators, and the NSF Enterprise Architect, to ensure that all aspects of database structures are consistent with overall design criteria.
Evaluates and recommends to DIS’s Senior Database Administrator/Project Leader and other key division staff proposed solutions to information processing requirements related to application and database designs. Because of rapid technological change in the discipline, incumbent is required to maintain professional contacts to keep abreast of the state of the art.
Defines requirements, develops logical data structures, and establishes physical database structures that meet the logical model.
Monitors performance of NSF databases using DBA performance monitoring tools.
Troubleshoots database performance issues.
Helps to develop plans, policy, and procedures for database service recovery to ensure database integrity in the event of major catastrophe.
Reviews end user requirements to assist with vendor product evaluation and to determine impact on database structures providing alternate approaches.
Analyzes and documents data elements to eliminate redundancy and to establish and maintain a computerized data element dictionary.
Employs project management techniques to manage several tasks simultaneously requiring careful scheduling and control.
