As a Boiler Plant Operator, you will be performing the following duties: Operate, repair and maintain oil and gas fired high-pressure steam and high temperature water boiler plants and all auxiliary equipment. Boilers include several brands of combustion/pollution emission control devices. Periodically makes rounds of plant to visually check for equipment operating problems; constantly monitors meters/gauges and maintains required records. Inspect, observe, troubleshoot, remove, check for wear, clean, replace, repair, adjust, test and maintain complicated boiler plant systems and equipment to critical/rigid specifications and tolerances. Make adjustments to operating systems, equipment and controls; determine need for shutting down or firing up additional boilers; and adjust firing controls, fuel feeds and air drafts for best combustion efficiency. Perform routine scheduled preventive maintenance. Remove burner, burner nozzle, strainer and orifice assemblies; dismantle and locate defects; reassemble and re-install components. Clean refractory to include fireside, watersides, fire rings and boiler floors. Install/maintain/repair complex system of valves, piping and fittings associated with power and heating boiler operations. Perform emergency major repairs on an irregular basis and maintain service records on all equipment.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the work of a Boiler Plant Operator.
Screen Out Element for the WG-10: Your resume must indicate your ability to perform the work of a Boiler Plant Operator, WG-10 under close supervision: Operating oil or gas fired high-pressure steam or high temperature hot water boiler plants; operating controls and maintaining equipment in facilities with single boilers plants to produce hot water or steam limited to operation of plants not exceeding an aggregate capacity of 300MBTU/HR. "Failure to meet the screen out element will result in an ineligible rating."
This position requires the applicant to possess and maintain a Class II Operating Engineer Certificate or equivalent. The certified operator shall be limited to operation of boiler plants not exceeding an aggregate of 300MBTU/HR. (NOTE: Applicants MUST submit a copy of the Class II Operating Engineer Certification with application package.)
JOB ELEMENTS: You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency with the following elements:

Physical effort: Frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment; e.g. auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Work requires moderate to strenuous physical effort and long periods of walking, kneeling, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lifts and carries boiler parts, equipment, and chemical supplies weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
Working Conditions: Employee normally works indoors on concrete surfaces. Occasionally works outside for short periods. When working outside is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Works on catwalks and ladders. Employee is subject to high temperature, high noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fuel, and fumes in the work area. Exposed to toxic effects of refrigerants, scalding hot water, and steam temperatures up to 365°F. Subject to cuts and abrasions from use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, and contact with pipes and boilers. Must be able to work using/wearing applicable PPE (hearing, eye, fall, respiratory protection, safety shoes, hard hat, gloves, etc. when required).
