For more than 20 years, the VA Puget Sound Health Care System has offered this exciting, year-long clinical residency for BSN nursing students, between their junior and senior years. VALOR is designed to increase participant's clinical skills, clinical judgment and critical thinking while caring for our nation's Veterans. One-to-one preceptor relationships help students build confidence in their nursing skills, and VALOR students have a unique opportunity to connect with the VA Puget Sound Health Care System to assess the feasibility of employment after graduation. VA Puget Sound Health Care System is known for excellence in the delivery of health care. Every year, VALOR Students complete a special project, the results of which are shared with their preceptors and nursing staff.

Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunity Residency (VALOR)
VALOR is an elite, paid program for senior nursing students with outstanding academic and clinical achievements. The VALOR experience will include clinical practice with a qualified RN preceptor and participation in nursing-focused clinical conferences, as well as didactic work. The Nursing VALOR Program provides the student with an opportunity to enhance their clinical skills and knowledge base, and learn VA policies and procedures.
Clinical assignments available in a variety of specialties: acute medical surgical units, critical care, home health, renal dialyses, emergency department, mental health, outpatient surgery and rehab unit. Students have the opportunity to rotate to more than one clinical setting throughout the course of the year.
Work Schedule: Intermittent, 40 hours/week during summer program and one day per month throughout the school year. Tour will vary based on the needs. The work will require various tours of duty including days, evening, nights, weekends and holidays

Physical Requirements:
This position
involves considerable amount of standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 6
hours), stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. It requires
repositioning patients, assisting with transfers from wheelchairs/stretchers and
transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices are
available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift clients.
The work may involve pushing or lifting in excess of 45 pounds and going up and
down flights of stairs. The position requires visual (corrected to 20/30 or
better with color discrimination) and auditory acuity at a level to provide
safe and effective nursing care. The position requires the nurse to work for
periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with neck in a fully flexed
or extended position. The nurse may occasionally be exposed to patients who are
combative secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The nurse
many be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be
required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or
operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent must possess sound and logical
clinical judgment. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible
individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to
shift priorities based on patient needs. The position also requires ability to
work on computers for extended periods of time.

Students will be paid at a salary rate equal to 80 percent of the local VA facilities annual salary rate for a Nurse 1, Level 1, Step 1. No future obligations to the VA, or guarantees from the VA will be incurred as a result of participating in this program. However, the Nursing VALOR participant who is selected for VA employment after graduation may be eligible for a salary rate above the minimum, based on superior qualifications as evidenced by their successful completion of this program.
