This position is located at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, located in San Francisco, CA.  You will serve as the Museum Curator (Registrar) for San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.  You will provide oversight of an extensive and diverse maritime related collection and carry out responsibilities in collections management.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (SAFR) is located in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park offers the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Pacific Coast maritime history. The Park includes a fleet of historic vessels, a visitor center, a maritime museum, and a library/research facility. The park also incorporates the Aquatic Park Historic District, bounded by Van Ness Avenue, Beach Street, and Hyde Street.

Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Maintain master museum data and documentation for strict accountability of object and archival collections.
  • Perform collection management related tasks including acquisitions, accessioning, cataloging, loans and deaccessions.
  • Plan and arrange proper storage of all objects, including small vessels and large ship items, at multiple storage locations.
  • Respond to public and staff requests for information.
  • Prepare and submit moderate to complex reporting information.

Basic Requirement: To meet the BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT for this position, you must meet one of the following requirements:

 

Completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field or a discipline related to this position, such as archeology, anthropology, archives, ethnology, history, maritime history or museum studies.  (You must submit a copy of your transcript). OR

 

Have an appropriate combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e., 24 semester hours) in museum work, or a discipline closely related to museum management such as  archeology, anthropology, archives, ethnology, history or museum studies; PLUS additional appropriate experience or additional course work.  The quality of this combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to meet the basic qualification requirement of this position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.   Examples of such experience include, but are not limited to:  assisting with and/or training in museum management, including interpreting policies and procedures that emphasize museum management; assisting with long-term museum collection storage; and documenting ethnographic, archaeological, archival, history and natural history collections. (You must submit a copy of your transcript and your application materials must support your claim of specialized experience). OR

 

Have four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a 4-year course of study in museum work or museum management.   Examples of such experience include, but are not limited to:  assisting with and/or training in museum management, including interpreting policies and procedures that emphasize museum management; assisting with long-term museum collection storage; and documenting ethnographic, archeological, archival, history and natural history collections. (Your application materials MUST support your claim of specialized experience). You must submit a copy of your college transcripts showing grade received and semester/quarter hours completed to document that you meet the educational requirements for this position. 

 

If your education was completed in a foreign or non-accredited institution, you must submit evidence that your education is of an acceptable quality (equivalent to the educational standards in this country).

 

In addition to meeting one of the basic qualification requirements listed above; you must also meet one of the following Additional Qualification Requirements for the Museum Curator, GS-1015-11:

 

Have at least one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal Service (can be obtained in the public or private sector) that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform all of the following:  1) apply the principles of museum management, using technical expertise in their application; 2) manage and administer a park-related museum program, including delivery of technical assistance to a local network of parks and partner organizations; and 3) document and manage long-term storage of museum collections, with special emphasis on ethnographic, archeological, archival, history and natural history collections, and providing access to and facilitating research of these collections. (Your application materials MUST support your claim of specialized experience). OR

 

Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD degree or PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in museum management or another field directly related to museum management such as history, archeology, ethnology, archives, or museum studies.  This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university. (You must submit a copy of your transcript). OR

 

Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate education which totals 100% percent of the additional qualification requirement, when computed as percentages and added. Only education in excess of the first 18 semester hours may be combined with experience.  If your education is currently described in quarter hours, convert to semester hours by multiplying by the fraction 2/3.  If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be used.  Part-time work is prorated in crediting experience (e.g., if you work 20 hours per week for a 12-month period you will be credited 6 months of experience. (You must submit a copy of your transcript and your application materials must support your claim of specialized experience.


For any college courses, graduate work, research, thesis or other non-descript courses listed on your transcript (such as "Independent Research"), please indicate through your resume or attachment memorandum from an academic professor how each course fulfills the specific education requirement, i.e., state number of semester hours credited, topic of study, grade earned.

Time-in-Grade Requirements: Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the Federal service.  All qualifications and time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

 

Conditions of Employment:  Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license and at least 18 years of age to operate a government vehicle under Director's Order 50B.
