JOB SUMMARY:

Experience your America by building a fulfilling career by joining the National Park Service.  The National Park Service preserves unimpaired, the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service, you serve as a front-line representative of the agency and frequently you are the first and only contact the visiting public has with an NPS employee.  You work at an entrance station, visitor center, campground or other visitor contact station, collecting fees and providing answers to visitor questions about recreational opportunities, interpretive services, and concession facilities and services.  You distribute maps and brochures, provide directions through the park and inform visitors of potential safety hazards.  As you're responsible for collecting fees and following accountability guidelines for handling government funds, you must pass a required background investigation.  You operate an electronic cash register, perform open and closing shift functions to verify money collected and stock sold.  Other duties may include a variety of visitor services such as traffic control, radio dispatching or back-country patrols.

 

The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill many temporary positions at Great Basin National Park and Lake Mead National Recreation Area.  Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow.

Great Basin National Park; is an isolated park located in east-central Nevada just off U.S. Highways 6 & 50 near the Utah border. It includes the former Lehman Caves National Monument. Park elevation ranges from 5,300 feet to 13,063 feet. Summer temperatures may reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit at the lower elevation and mid 80's in the higher elevations. Winter temperatures may reach -10 degrees in the higher elevations to mild conditions of 30-40s in the valleys. Though the park is located in the Great Basin Desert, it is a mountain park with most of the park above 6,100 feet elevation. This island oasis has streams, lakes and bristlecone pine groves. Baker, with a population of approximately 100, is located five miles from the main park entrance. Baker has four cafes/bars, two gas stations, a small convenience store, a community church fellowship, three motels, two RV parks, volunteer fire department and emergency medical service. Ely, Nevada, the White Pine county seat is 61 miles to the west and offers amenities such as medical and dental facilities, churches, banks and airport.   The park is located approximately four hours driving time from Salt Lake City, Utah and five hours from Las Vegas, Nevada.

 

Lake Mead National Recreation Area; LIVING CONDITIONS AT BOULDER BEACH/CALVILLE BAY, BOULDER CITY, NEVADA: Located in Nevada and Arizona, Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers a range of recreational experiences.  Its 1.5 million-acre size, nearly 1000 miles of shoreline, warm water, scenic settings and diverse natural and cultural resources draw millions of visitors to the park.  Boulder City is located in Nevada within Clark County (population is approximately 15,000) and is 15 to 30 miles South of Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas (adjacent to the fastest growing county within Nevada).  There are shopping facilities and excellent grade and high schools, numerous colleges, universities and hospitals are available in the area. Winter climate is mild and summer heat relieved by air-conditioning.  Homes to buy/rent are usually available in Henderson, Las Vegas and Boulder City. Nevada has no state income tax and there are unlimited recreational opportunities.

 

LIVING CONDITIONS FOR COTTONWOOD COVE, SEARCHLIGHT, NV: Cottonwood Cove, Searchlight, Nevada is situated in the Colorado River Basin in Clark County, Nevada and located on U.S. 95 and State Route 164, midway between Las Vegas and Laughlin. Elevation is 3,540 feet. Cottonwood Cove is one of the three major developed areas on Lake Mohave. Cottonwood Cove is located on the Nevada shore of the lake, approximately 22 miles north of Davis Dam. Its development accommodates a wide variety of recreational activities and provides a public launch facility and commercial marina services as well as other public use and support activities.

 

LIVING CONDITIONS FOR KATHERINE LANDING, BULLHEAD CITY, AZ: Bullhead City is a growing community of 50,000+.  It has the full range of amenities such as supercenter grocery stores, hospital, and schools.

 

LIVING CONDITIONS FOR TEMPLE BAR, KINGMAN, AZ: Temple Bar located in northwestern Arizona, enjoys a slower pace than similar facilities around Lake Mead NRA.   Its location on the eastern part of the lake puts it far enough away from major cities to avoid crowds that throng developments.   Temple Bar is located just a little more than 80 miles from Las Vegas and 23 miles from Hoover Dam.  Temple Bar is nearby the town of Dolan Springs.   Dolan Springs has schools, library, community center with conference rooms and fully equipped kitchens, a bank, and two medical clinics with full-time physicians.

 

LIVING CONDITIONS FOR ECHO BAY, OVERTON, NV: Echo Bay is located in Nevada within Clark County and is 50 miles from Las Vegas, 50 miles to Henderson and 58 miles to Boulder City Nevada all to the South West.  Overton Nevada is in the Moapa Valley, 25 miles North of Echo Bay.  Within the Moapa Valley, there are shopping facilities and grade and high schools available.  Las Vegas and Henderson have numerous colleges, universities and hospitals.  Winter climate is mild and summer heat relieved by air-conditioning.  Nevada has no state income tax and there are unlimited recreational opportunities.

Great Basin National Park:  Operate cash register, balance and reconcile shift reports, open and close visitor center, sells cave tour tickets, Inter-Agency Federal Recreation Passes.  Process remits and deposits to the Federal Reserve Bank.  Answers Advance Ticket Phone and processes orders for advance tickets.  Answer visitor questions and disseminates information of the park and surrounding area in a professional manner.

 

Keeps record of visitations statistics, compile monthly use reports and enters into the Public Use web site.  Read and record traffic information.  Maintaining traffic counters.  

 

Lake Mead National Recreation Area:  Serves as a front line representative of the agency, works at an entrance station, visitor center, campground, or other visitor contact station provides answers to recurring visitor questions concerning the specific park area, explains the areas recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, and campground availability; distributes maps, brochures, and other printed material; provides directions and routes of travel through the park; and informs visitors of potential safety hazards responsible for collecting appropriate fees at park entrance station, campground, or other visitor contact station while following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds operates an electronic cash register, performs opening and closing shift functions, issues entrance receipts, park passes, and federal recreation passports, and verifies receipts and passes may perform campground duties such as collecting fees, monitoring campground self-registration, checking site availability, and compliance checks.

 

Other duties include traffic control, gathering information regarding accidents or incidents, radio dispatch, minor maintenance duties, restocking of supplies, provides emergency medical treatment to current level of training and responsibility, serve as a member of the area’s search and rescue or fire suppression crew.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required.  Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain or dense populations.  High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods.  Duties may be performed alone in isolated locations.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience or the education as described below.  Equivalent combinations of experience and education may also be used to qualify.

 

Selective Placement Factor (Mandatory Screen Out):  Handling money

 

·         Applicants must be able to collect and account for money. 

 

In addition to the selective placement factor described above, applicants must also meet the following qualification requirements.

 

For the GS-04 grade level

 

Experience:  Applicants must have one year of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates my ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a Visitor Use Assistant.  General experience includes greeting the public, disseminating information, providing directions and fee collection.  

OR

Education:  Applicants must have two years of education above high school (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours).  This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university.  

OR

Equivalent combination of experience and education.

 

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received or whether the experience was gained in a part-time or full-time occupation.  Full-time work is generally considered 40 hours per week.  Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.  Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position, the starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the number of hours scheduled to work per week.

Special Instructions for Foreign Education:  Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements.  You must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties.  Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.  You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists.  Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.  Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.  

 

Must wear the National Park Service uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.

 

May be assigned to work nights, early mornings, rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.  

 

Government housing may be available. 

 

Overtime is required.
